The MoU documents the cooperation between the parties within the scope of the Alliances Lesser Caucasus Programme (ALCP) which aims to contribute to transition to durable market economy of the livestock sector in Georgia. The programme with the budget of CHF 7’181’000 is funded by the Swiss government/Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The programme is implemented by Mercy Corps Georgia in the regions of Kvemo Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Ajara.
“At this stage 5 bio-security yards will be rehabilitated across the country within the framework of the present MoU. These stations will shield livestock from various diseases and remarkably reduce the risk of spreading diseases”, said Zaza Dolidze, Head of National Food Agency.
Five bio-security yards will be at service in Dedoplistskaro, Sighnaghi, Gardabani, Marneuli and Bolnisi. Under the present MoU, the ALCP will facilitate building of two yards in Gardabani and Marneuli, while the three yards in the remaining municipalities will be financed from the central budget.
Bio-security yards are fenced stations with a concrete surface. Sheep dipping basins and cattle showers for disinfection, water reservoirs, warehouses, veterinary services, etc. will all be available at the stations to disinfect livestock and keep them from spreading various diseases during their movement. The Animal Movement Route is used by over a million head of sheep and cattle each year as they move from winter pastures in Kakheti to summer pastures in Samstkhe Javakheti, Kvemo Kartli and Tusheti and is vital for the livestock of Georgia.
