On 19 July 2014, following a final week of intense negotiations, the intergovernmental Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG), in which Switzerland played an active role, adopted its report containing a proposal for sustainable development goals (SDGs). This proposal is the result of an 18-month process which entailed much wide-ranging debate. The OWG report, which contains 17 goals with 169 targets, will be submitted to the UN General Assembly in September of this year and will be the basis for the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda, which are expected to begin in early 2015.
