Follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda

An effective follow-up and review framework is crucial to ensure that the international community is on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and that the goals are being implemented in practice. The 2030 Agenda provides for a mechanism based on national reporting that covers three levels: national, regional and global.

As in other international processes such as the Millennium Development Goals and the Rio Agenda for Sustainable Development, UN member states report on their implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The relevant international platforms also carry out thematic reviews.

At the international level, the results of this follow-up are presented to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which was established in 2012. This also includes the results of the review of the implementation of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda for development finance. The HLPF discusses the results, draws conclusions and makes recommendations. Any country can take part in these discussions and provide an account of its progress. Switzerland was one of 22 countries to present its initial national efforts to the HPFL in July 2016. In July 2018, Switzerland presented its first country report.

The HLPF meets annually in the context of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and every four years during the UN General Assembly. The next meeting under the auspices of the UN General Assembly will take place in 2023.
