The right to health of Palestinians living in the occupied Palestinian territory is severely hindered by the occupation practices imposed by the Israeli government. SDC support to WHO Advocacy Unit in the oPt enables the organization to pursue its evidence-based advocacy efforts to ensure increased compliance of duty bearers with their obligations under international law. The intervention focuses on areas with limited Palestinian Authority (PA) jurisdiction (Area C and East Jerusalem), or with limited effective PA authority as in Gaza Strip.

Energy Efficiency Program in Artisanal Brick Kilns in Latin America to Mitigate Climate Change – Phase II

Energy Efficiency Program's in Artisanal Brick Kilns in Latin America to Mitigate Climate Change (EELA) second phase will focus on making the market work for energy-efficient technologies and innovations developed and tested at pilot level during the first phase. The applied systemic approach allows both the scaling up of these innovations and influencing public policies, so that brick producers can achieve better economic and environmental performance. Experiences and results will further be discussed in the context of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC).

In Serbia i Rom vivono in difficili condizioni sociali ed economiche. Il 60 per cento di questo gruppo della popolazione è classificato come «molto povero». In molti insediamenti rom, le persone vivono in spazi molto ristretti, con un’infrastruttura scadente e in condizioni igieniche insufficienti. L’obiettivo del progetto è di migliorare le condizioni di vita dei Rom nel campo dell’abitazione, del lavoro e del reddito, nonché garantire e rafforzare i loro diritti.

Il cambiamento climatico rappresenta un notevole ostacolo allo sviluppo e, in molte regioni, rischia di compromettere i progressi compiuti. In Perù l’altopiano andino risente particolarmente delle ripercussioni del cambiamento climatico: per questo motivo la DSC sostiene nella regione un progetto volto ad assicurare la necessaria base di sostentamento alla popolazione rurale più povera e a migliorarne la capacità di resilienza al mutamento del clima.

Support to the Peace Process in Nepal (Nepal Peace Trust Fund) – Phase IV

Through the single funding channel of the NPTF, donors strengthen the role and capacity of the state in Nepal’s peace process. This enables suporting elements of this process that are either pivotal, such as the Constitutional Assembly, the national and local elections, the rehabilitation of ex-combatants and the establishment of transitional justice mechanisms or peripheral like reconstruction of police posts destroyed during the war, establishment of medical centres for disabled victims of the war, strengthening of local peace committees. All this support globally contributes to increasing security for the population.

Food security in the Great Lakes Region - Nutrition

The program addresses malnutrition by piloting a coordinated multi-stakeholder approach of the four UN agencies UNICEF, WHO, WFP and FAO together with the two Governments of Rwanda and Burundi. The activities will take place in two districts of Rwanda (Nyamagabe and Rutsiro) and one province of Burundi (Ngozi) where food insecurity and poverty are at highest level. The focus is on the reduction of chronic malnutrition of children under five and pregnant and lactating mothers.

Kenya – Skills for Life Training in Kakuma

Refugee protection and integration has been a central objective of the SDC Humanitarian Aid for many years in the region. In the new regional Whole of Government strategy for the Horn of Africa within the pillar migration and protection this objective remains important. The project in Kakuma camp will develop skills that are of utmost benefit within the camp, to the youth of the host communities but also in the refugees’ country of origin, keeping in mind a possible future return.

In its third phase the project for the empowerment of democratic institutions concentrates its work on the improvement of access to justice. The three components: implementation of legal arbitration boards, empowerment of public defence and the contribution to a constructive dialogue about judicial reforms enhances access to justice for vulnerable population groups and with it the claiming and enforcement of their rights.

NETCELL – Strengthening malaria control

The Government of Tanzania together with Partners has developed a comprehensive malaria control system based on two pillars: 1) vector control (largely based on prevention through Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) distribution campaigns and vouchers) and 2) case management (proper diagnosis and effective treatment). SDC has supported decisively this effort since 2002 through technical and management support. This will be the last phase of support with strong focus on handing over to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
