WFP Secondment

The 2015 El Nino event is the strongest and longest in the past 35 years. Consequent drought and harvest loss have pushed 32 million people into food insecurity in Southern Africa alone. WFP's response, in the worst affected countries is budgeted at 782 million USD and coordinated by the WFP RB in Johannesburg. The overall coordination of the response is assured by the Southern Africa Regional Inter Agency Standing Committee (RIASCO). The seconded SHA expert will liaise with RIASCO on behalf of the WFP RB and COs and thus contribute to well targeted, synergetic and adequate action in food security for affected populations.

Myanmar: NRC, Access to Civil Documentation, Kayah and Mon States

Due to the decades of conflict, entire communities have been unable to obtain their national ID cards, thus leading to their inability to exercise their rights and access to basic government services. In cooperation with the Ministry of Immigration and Population (MoIP), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) conducts a quick impact activity to provide beneficiaries in target communities in Kayah and Mon States with Citizen Scrutinity Cards (CSCs). The project aims to improve the protection environment for displaced persons, returnees and host communities. NRC provides innovative technical inputs and training of MoIP staff on the features of a one-stop, free-of-charge, same-day computerized service.

Colombia Information Management and Analysis Unit (CIMAU)

Colombia has been suffering from a protracted armed conflict, which affected the living conditions of over 7.5 million people. Colombia has a historic opportunity to achieve a peace agreement with the FARC-EP guerrilla in 2016, entering into a transition period out of conflict into local peace and statebuilding. In this post-conflict context, a data management system, taking into account not only humanitarian, but also peacebuilding and development needs is crucial to contribute to a more strategic decision making and better alignment and harmonization.

WFP – Cash-based Transfers

The nature and type of response provided to both humanitarian and development issues in Myanmar has evolved significantly in the past few years with an increased interest for cash transfer programming (CTP). Government and donors are encouraging CTP. Finance services providers and mobile companies are widening their coverage and will increasingly be able to support CTP. WFP’s Strategic plan 2008–2011 expanded the role of WFP from food aid to food assistance, introducing a more varied toolbox of responses, including cash and vouchers. Seconding WFP in Myanmar with two Cash experts is aiming at (1) providing technical support to the WFP team in Myanmar and (2) coordinating and representing the Cash Working Group (CWG) chaired by WFP.

South Sudan, Mercy Corps: Back to farming, Nhialdu

The Bentiu PoC was established in December 2013 with currently over 120’000 people living in the site At the beginning, people mainly came to the PoC seeking protection from violence, but since mid-2015 people’s main reason is to receive food due the chronic food insecurity situation in the area created by the conflict. The situation shows prospects for response and recovery interventions outside the Bentiu PoC.

Colloque régional de l’Union Africaine « Radicalisation et extrémisme religieux violent au Sahel »

Le Sahel connaît depuis plusieurs années une recrudescence de l’extrémisme violent, avec des groupes terroristes et criminels capables d’élargir leur zone d’opération et de recrutement à des populations jusqu’ici épargnées par les phénomènes de radicalisation. La Suisse souhaite renforcer ses liens avec l’Union Africaine et lui apporter son soutien pour l’organisation de deux colloques au Mali et au Tchad, visant à renforcer la position des leaders religieux et traditionnels comme acteurs de paix et à sensibiliser contre les dangers de l’instrumentalisation des religions.

Bangladesh Agricultural and Disaster Insurance Programme (BADIP)

Smallholder farmers in Bangladesh face considerable risks. Droughts, floods, winds, temperature shocks, pests and diseases can destroy their livelihoods and leave them indebted for years. To cope with such shocks, they are often forced to sell productive assets and fall back in poverty. By developing the market for agricultural insurance and related extension services, BADIP will sustainably increase poor farmers’ resilience, giving them the confidence and security to step up their productive investments.

Ecuador Earthquake: Bilateral contributions

An earthquake of the magnitude of 7.8 (Richter scale) hit Northern Ecuador at 18:58 local time, Saturday 16 April 2016. The earthquake caused widespread damage, collapsing structures within hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter. Swiss Humanitarian Aid (SHA) deployed the “Grupo de Intervencion y Apoyo Rapido” (GIAR) followed by a SET which will end on May 8th 2016. SHA will support partner organizations’ projects in the sectors of WASH and Shelter to contribute to the emergency response and early recovery.

Ecuador Earthquake: Contribution to IFRC Emergency Appeal

On 16 April, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck coastal areas in north-west Ecuador. The most affected areas are the provinces of Manabi,Esmeraldas, Santa Elena, Guayas, Santo Domingo and Los Ríos, for which the Government has declared a “state of emergency”. Through its Emergency Appeal, the IFRC aims at supporting the Ecuadorian Red Cross (ERC) to assist 100’000 people affected by the earthquake over a period of 12 months and will focus on health, WASH, shelter, and livelihoods.

Grands Lacs: Fonds régional Actions urgentes

A small action is a one-off contribution to a humanitarian endeavour with no following phase that has to be operationally completed within a maximum period of 12 months. It is a flexible, efficient and transparent tool for SDC HA to support small humanitarian activities, including emergency response.

Ecuador Earthquake: Contribution UN Flash Appeal, UNICEF WASH

02.05.2016 - 31.07.2016

On 16 April, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck coastal areas in north-west Ecuador. Six provinces are declared “state of emergency”. On 22.04.16 the UN issued a Flash Appeal which aims at multi-sector life-saving assistance, protection services and immediate livelihood restoration for the next three months. Within the Appeal, UNICEF plans to support 60’000 people with the re-establishment of primary water mains and temporary solutions to replace the damaged public water supply grids in highly affected municipalities.
