Against historic levels of food security due to conflicts, climate change and COVID-19, Switzerland supports annually in 28 SDC priority countries operations of the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide humanitarian and development assistance. It funds indistinctively Country Strategy Plans, incorporating all WFP programmes or projects, based on affected population needs and potential synergies with other local partners, especially national governments and civil society.

Against historic levels of food security due to conflicts, climate change and COVID-19, Switzerland supports annually operations of the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide humanitarian and development assistance. Switzerland contributes to the Immediate Response Account (IRA), a multilateral flexible mechanism that allows WFP to provide financial support in underfunded emergencies. The IRA reinforces the principles of timeliness, predictability and flexibility.

ICRC Operations Appeals 2022: Allocation 2022 - Afghanistan, Myanmar

SDC funding to ICRC operations allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance for people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence. In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises.

UNICEF EMOPS Core Contribution 2022-2023

UNICEF is an indispensable UN partner to support the needs of children. The Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS) ensures that the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) role in complex emergencies is clearly defined, the organization properly equipped and prepared to deliver its mandate. The SDC/HA’s support to EMOPS in Geneva enables UNICEF to lead inter-agency humanitarian coordination, response and standard setting in the fields of Water and Sanitation (WASH), Education, Nutrition and Child Protection.

Global Programme Food Security Innovation Platforms

An improved participation of all stakeholders in research and innovation is crucial for finding solutions to fundamentally transform the global food systems, which is required to ensure food and nutrition security for all while reversing degradation of land and water. With this support, Swiss scientific institutions and the SDC are better connected with global networks, promoting creation of knowledge and innovations and their dissemination among a broad range of actors and food system stakeholders.

UNRWA - Contribution to UNRWA's 2022 Emergency Appeal for Lebanon

In Lebanon, the needs of Palestine refugees have been exacerbated by the multiple crises hitting the country over the past 2 years. UNRWA plays an important role in preserving the resilience of Palestine refugees and in preserving stability in the region. Switzerland therefore responds to UNRWA’s Syria, Lebanon and Jordan Emergency Appeal 2022 by earmarking its support to the emergency needs of Palestine refugees in Lebanon, including provision of cash and food assistance.

Contribution 2022-2024 to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

The Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a fund set up by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 1985 to provide immediate financial support to Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies (NS), enabling them to carry out their unique role as first responders after a disaster. Since 2018, Forecast-based Action (FbA) is integrated in the DREF, and it allows NS to access forecast-based financing.

Afghanistan: Additional allocation to ICRC Operations Budget Extension Appeal 2022

The ICRC is a key humanitarian actor in Afghanistan with over 30 years’ presence and experience. The response in 2022 focuses on the protection of civilians emphasizing on community based protection, providing and bolstering health services by making life-saving care and physical rehabilitation available, enabling communities’ access to obtain essential services and build their resilience, supporting authorities to improve living conditions of detainees and supporting the Afghan Red Crescent Society to strengthen its capacities.
