Projekt abgeschlossen

Through the present contribution Switzerland will support the “Grain from Ukraine Initiative” (GfUI). The initiative was launched by the Government of Ukraine (GoU) in November 2022 in close collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP). Aim of the initiative is to facilitate the delivery by the GoU of 125,000 tons of grain to nations facing widespread food insecurity.

Hintergrund

Fragile countries globally have been negatively impacted by the deteriorating macroeconomic conditions and trade disruptions related to the war in Ukraine, at a time when many households are still facing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on livelihoods and income sources. High food prices have triggered a global crisis that is driving millions more into extreme poverty, magnifying hunger and malnutrition across the globe. In addition, an unprecedented drought is driving extreme humanitarian needs across Sub-Sahara Africa and particularly in the eastern Horn of Africa. Beginning in late 2020, this is the longest and most severe drought recorded in the Horn of Africa in at least 70 years, resulting in multiple failed harvests and large-scale livestock deaths that have decimated food and income sources for rural communities, placed increasing pressure on the cost of food among urban communities, and led to rising levels of destitution and displacement.

On 26 November 2022, the GoU launched the GfUI. The initiative is designed to support exports of grain purchased by the GoU to help countries facing widespread food crisis to mitigate the fall-outs of the war in Ukraine on the global food chain systems. The government aims to procure up to 60 vessel loads of grain from farmers to be shipped from Ukrainian ports to countries facing the threat of famine and drought.

Ziele The contribution has the objective of covering any costs associated with the logistics, transport, distribution and administration of the products delivered in-kind by the GoU under the Grains from Ukraine Initiative (GfUI) to the WFP Country Strategic Plans (CSPs) across the Sub-Sahara region.
Zielgruppen Food insecure men and women
Mittelfristige Wirkungen People across the Sub-Sahara region are better able to meet their urgent food and nutrition needs.
