Swiss Cooperation Office and Consular Agency in South Sudan

In South Sudan, Switzerland is represented through a Cooperation Office in Juba, Central Equatoria, under the jurisdiction of the Embassy of Switzerland in Addis Abeba (Ethiopia). It is in charge of Humanitarian Aid, Development Cooperation, and programmes sponsored by the Peace and Human Rights Divison (PHRD) of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).

Increasing presence since 2005

Switzerland looks back at many years of partnership with former Southern Sudan and, since 9 July 2011, with the Republic of South Sudan. The Swiss engagement started with aid operations in the region in 1994. After the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005, Switzerland increased its presence and established a Programme Office of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Juba in 2006.

Swiss House in Juba

The establishment of the Programme Office in 2006 was followed by an extensive rehabilitation of the compound,  also known as the Swiss House, between 2008 and 2010. This set the basis for Switzerland’s future engagement in the country, and gradually led to the expansion of the Programme Office into a Cooperation Office in 2011. Currently, 4 Swiss expatriates and 18 national employees are working at the Swiss House in Juba.

The team of the Cooperation Office in Juba is working with a holistic Whole-of-Government Approach, based on Switzerland’s Cooperation Programme for South Sudan 2022 – 2025 that focuses on food security and livelihoods, protection of civilians and promotion of human rights, as well as peace- and nation-building.

Since 9 July 2011, the Republic of South Sudan is part of the consular district of the Embassy of Switzerland in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. On behalf of the Embassy, the Swiss Cooperation Office in Juba offers the following consular services: Travel Advice, Living in South Sudan, Information on Switzerland and Schengen visa.
