The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) was established in September 2011 to support the necessary reforms in the areas of human rights, political affairs and security with the Libyan authorities. It is a peace-building mission under the aegis of the Political Affairs Department of the Security Council. The security sector reform unit includes a detachment of police officers who are responsible for accompanying the Libyan police in the process of transformation. Switzerland seconded a judicial police officer to UNSMIL from May 2013 to May 2014.
