Two new multidisciplinary research and innovation projects in the space sector

On 31 August the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research announced the selection of two research and innovation projects as part of national activities in the space sector. Selected through a call launched by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) in 2022, these MARVIS (Multidisciplinary Advanced Research Ventures in Space) projects stand out for their multidisciplinary nature and their potential for developing specialist skills in the field of space, as well as their potential to generate results that can be incorporated into the activities of the European Space Agency (ESA).


Wildfires in Greece: Switzerland dispatches army helicopters

Wildfires continue to rage across Greece. In response to requests for help from the Greek authorities, Switzerland is dispatching three army helicopters and personnel to reinforce fire-fighting operations on the ground.

Das im November 2022 unterzeichnete Abkommen über die Zusammenarbeit der Wettbewerbsbehörden zwischen der Schweiz und Deutschland wird am 1. September 2023 in Kraft treten. Das Abkommen erlaubt der Schweizer Wettbewerbskommission und dem deutschen Bundeskartellamt eine effiziente Durchsetzung des Wettbewerbsrechts in grenzüberschreitenden Sachverhalten.


Ukraine: Switzerland implements new sanctions against Belarus

On 30 August, the Federal Council decided to adopt further sanctions against Belarus to bring Switzerland in line with the latest measures adopted by the European Union (EU) on 3 August. The changes will come into effect at 6pm on 30 August. More than 40 individuals and entities were added to the sanctions list on 15 August.


Thematic sanctions: Federal Council to pursue current practice

On 30 August 2023, the Federal Council decided not to adopt the sanctions imposed by the EU as part of its human rights sanctions regime in connection with the Navalny and Kara-Murza cases. In the future, the Federal Council will continue to decide on a case-by-case basis wether to adopt measures from the EU’s thematic sanctions regimes.


Ignazio Cassis signs agreement in Slovenia on implementation of second Swiss contribution

During a visit to Slovenia, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), today signed an agreement on the implementation of Switzerland's second contribution in Ljubljana. The agreement provides for the financing of projects aimed at improving Slovenia's energy efficiency and developing its renewable energy resources. Mr Cassis also attended the Bled Strategic Forum, where he took part in a panel discussion on the future of multilateralism.


State Secretary Hirayama attends informal EU ministerial meeting on competition in the field of research and innovation

Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, took part in the informal meeting of research and innovation ministers from the EU member states in Santander (Spain) on 27 and 28 July. The talks focused on European science diplomacy and the further strategic planning of Horizon Europe (2021–2027). On the fringes of the meeting Ms Hirayama held bilateral discussions with her counterparts from Germany, Romania, Estonia, Austria and the host country Spain.


New EU policy measures based on Empa research: Boosting circular economy in the automotive sector

New vehicles are responsible for around ten percent of plastic demand in the EU, and the automotive sector is the number one consumer of raw materials like aluminum, magnesium, platinum group metals, and rare earth elements. A new set of provisions, proposed by the European Commission last week to revise the EU End-of-Life Vehicles Directive, intends to enhance the circularity of the automotive sector. Empa researchers played a crucial role in defining the content of this new proposal.

Federal Councillor Amherd signs memoranda of understanding to increase international cooperation

Federal Councillor Amherd, head of the DDPS, is hosting this year's D-A-CH meeting, for which Austria and Germany's ministers of defence, Klaudia Tanner and Boris Pistorius, have travelled to Bern. The main topics were the security situation in Europe, the effects of the war in Ukraine, trilateral cooperation and military peacebuilding. The three ministers of defence signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on their participation in the European Sky Shields Initiative (ESSI), which deals with procurement, and an agreement to promote research cooperation in the field of armaments. Ms Amherd and Mr Pistorius also expressed their intention to cooperate bilaterally in the area of strategic air transport.


Climate change and security: State Secretary Livia Leu attends OSCE High-Level Conference on Climate Change in Vienna

FDFA State Secretary Livia Leu took part today in the OSCE High-Level Conference on Climate Change, focusing on the impact of climate change on security and stability in the OSCE region. This follows State Secretary Leu's participation in the UN Security Council debate on climate security on 13 June 2023, highlighting Switzerland's commitment to addressing this critical issue.


Federal Councillor Viola Amherd receives Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in Bern

The annual gathering of Swiss, Austrian and German defence ministers is taking place in Bern on 6 and 7 July. Federal Councillor Viola Amherd has invited Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius to discuss a range of issues including the impact of the war in Ukraine on European security policy, trilateral cooperation and military peace support. A memorandum of understanding to participate in the European Sky Shields Initiative is also expected to be signed.
