Phase 3 Promoting Water Stewardship 2030

Water stewardship promotes sustainable and fair freshwater resource management by communities, businesses, utilities and investors to ensure access to water for everyone, but particularly the poor and most vulnerable and ecosystem preservation. As one of the few and longterm donors in the sector, SDC supports three key non-profit organizations complementarily to advocate for water stewardship and scale its uptake.

Contexto The scale and immediacy of the global water crisis, and its significance for social justice and economic progress is increasingly being exacerbated by climate change, rapidly rising demand, and poor governance. Water is a finite and vital resource that must be shared by households, businesses, agriculture and nature. It is, however, often sourced and retailed at prices that do not fully internalise its economic and environmental value. As a result, households and particularly businesses and industries use water wastefully. In addition, most wastewater is still discharged without treatment and businesses have an individual site limited approach to water governance. By proposing the right measures to rectify this, water stewardship can become a truly transformative movement, spearheaded by leading organizations, civil society, governments and businesses who contribute to water security. SDC plays an influential role in the water stewardship landscape with a focus from dialogue to action. It is one of the few and long-term donors in this sector.
Objetivos Credible water stewardship established as a globally adopted practice, expected norm and effective approach to support the achievement of SDG6 targets and water security for all.
