State of emergency in Thailand since 26 March 2020
In order to stem the spread of the coronavirus, the Thai government declared a state of emergency on 26 March 2020 and severe restrictions on entry into the country.
Since the beginning of April 2021, there has been an increase in COVID-19 transmission in Thailand, and especially in Bangkok. Different restrictive measures which might differ from one province to another have been taken to contain the spread of the virus. Follow carefully the local news for updates. We recommend to follow regularly these websites:
Please comply strictly with the instructions of the Thai authorities. Any violation of these rules is punishable.
Thailand started rolling out its COVID-19 inoculation program on 28 February 2021. Thailand aims at vaccinating about 70% of the population by the end of 2021. The next 2 phases of the vaccination program are as follow:
- 7 June 2021: vaccination starts for individuals over 60 years old or with underlying health conditions (chronic lung disease, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes or obesity). Registration is available as of 1 May 2021, through the Mor Phrom Line app (only in Thai at the moment).
- August 2021: vaccination for everyone above the age of 18. Registration starts in July. More information can be found on the Ministry of Public Health’s website.
Swiss nationals in Thailand are part of the country's resident population. It will therefore be primarily the task of the Thai authorities to procure vaccines for the foreign population residing here. The Thai Government has announced that foreigners will also have access to vaccines, likely during the third phase of the program. It is possible that eligible foreigners will already have access to vaccination in the 2nd phase. Furthermore, foreigners should also be able to receive a vaccine through a private hospital, but it is not clear yet when this will be possible.
The Swiss Embassy is in daily contact with the relevant Thai authorities and hospitals to obtain the latest update. We will post more information on the vaccination plan as soon as available.
Nowadays, more and more people are getting tested because of potential exposure to COVID-19. If you would like to be tested, please see this link of the Ministry of Public Health which is listing the hospitals with accredited medical laboratories for COVID-19 testing across the country.
