Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider committed to strengthening cooperation on migration with Greece

On 1 and 2 November, Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider visited Greece. Due to its location on Schengen’s external border, the country is facing ongoing challenges in the area of migration, which have an impact on the entire Schengen area, including Switzerland. The working visit by the head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) served to reaffirm Switzerland's commitment to addressing these challenges while respecting human rights. Ms Baume-Schneider and her Greek counterpart, Minister of Migration and Asylum Dimitris Kairidis, launched a Swiss-funded project for asylum seekers and refugees in Athens. At the end of the trip, she also visited various facilities on the island of Lesbos.


Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider on a working visit to Greece

Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider will travel to Greece on 1 and 2 November for a working visit. The trip will focus on the challenges associated with migration. Switzerland is financially supporting Greece, a country that lies on Schengen’s external border, in addressing these challenges. The programme will include bilateral talks with the Greek minister of migration and asylum, Dimitris Kairidis, and a visit to various facilities in Athens and Lesbos.



26th meeting of the Swiss-EU Joint AFMP Committee

The 26th meeting of the Swiss-EU Joint Committee on the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (AFMP) was held in Brussels on 26 October. The two delegations discussed various matters pertaining to the application of the AFMP.


Horizon package: Confederation funds further transitional measures for mono-beneficiary projects

The Confederation will provide funding for transitional measures for the 2024 Starting and Consolidator Grants of the European Research Council (ERC). This was decided by the Federal Council on 25 October 2023. Owing to Switzerland’s current non-association status in the Horizon package, researchers here are not eligible to participate in the corresponding European calls for proposals.


EUSALP in Bad Ragaz: Switzerland hands over the wheel to Slovenia

The European Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) has served as a joint tool for the Alpine countries and regions to improve cross-border cooperation in the Alps since 2015. During this year's Swiss Presidency (Confederation and cantons), EUSALP has been streamlined in terms of organisation and content to enable it to focus even more closely on its core interests in the future. At today's EUSALP General Assembly in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland handed over the organisation's presidency to Slovenia.


Federal Councillor Amherd to meet with European defence ministers in Brussels

The Framework Nations Concept (FNC), a multinational initiative for the joint development of defence capabilities, is celebrating its tenth anniversary. As initiator of the FNC, Germany has invited ministers to a meeting in Brussels to honour the cooperation programme. Federal Councillor Viola Amherd will attend the meeting with her European counterparts and exchange views on the current security situation, in particular the war in Ukraine and the attacks by Hamas in Israel.


President Berset to attend third meeting of the European Political Community

President Alain Berset will attend the third meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) in the southern Spanish city of Granada on 5 October. The meeting will be attended by representatives from 47 states including Switzerland, and from the institutions of the European Union.



Federal Council presents draft Foreign Policy Strategy 2024–27

At its meeting on 29 September 2023, the Federal Council adopted the draft Foreign Policy Strategy 2024–27. This strategy outlines Switzerland's stance in a rapidly evolving global landscape and establishes key foreign policy priorities and objectives for the upcoming legislative period. The draft will be submitted to the cantons and the foreign affairs committees of the National Council and Council of States for consultation before the final version is adopted in early 2024.


Focus on security policy in run-up to EPC summit

The FDFA, together with the European Council on Foreign Relations and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, held a workshop today in Geneva on the role of the European Political Community (EPC) in the European security architecture. Switzerland is actively involved in the EPC as a platform for dialogue and cooperation in Europe. The workshop took place in the run-up to the next EPC summit in Granada, Spain.


Switzerland participates in high-level event on the future of work and social dialogue

The head of SECO's Labour Directorate, Boris Zürcher, took part in a high-level event organised by the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council. The meeting took place on 21 and 22 September in Santiago de Compostela. The focus of the meeting was on the future of work and social dialogue in relation to the green and digital transitions.
