President Amherd to travel to Budapest for fifth European Political Community Summit

Press releases, 04.11.2024

The fifth European Political Community (EPC) Summit will take place in Budapest on Thursday, 7 November. President Amherd will represent Switzerland at the meeting, which will be attended by representatives from around 45 European states, the institutions of the European Union (EU) and other organisations.

President Amherd will take part in a discussion on economic integration and cooperation in Europe. Another focus of the summit is the issue of migration. Participants will also discuss the security situation, the war in Ukraine and the outlook for transatlantic relations. In addition to the official talks on the summit topics, Ms Amherd will take the opportunity to hold talks with counterparts on bilateral issues and on the state of negotiations between Switzerland and the EU.

The EPC is a forum for promoting political dialogue and cooperation on the European continent. The inaugural summit took place in Prague in October 2022. Since then, summits have been held alternately within and outside the EU. In the summer, at the invitation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Amherd had the opportunity (at the EPC summit at Blenheim Palace) to report on the outcome of the high-level Summit on Peace in Ukraine, which took place on the Bürgenstock in mid-June.

The autumn meeting takes place in the EU member state that holds the rotating EU Council presidency, which is currently Hungary. The sixth EPC summit in spring 2025 will be hosted by Albania, which will hold the event in Tirana. In autumn 2025, it will be Denmark’s turn to host the event.
