Only around 65% of the population of Slovakia live in houses connected to a sewer network. Switzerland has supported the municipality of Dlhé nad Cirochou with the construction of a 6.9 kilometre sewer network. This will give more than 1,100 inhabitants access to the municipality’s wastewater system. In addition, the wastewater treatment system will be expanded, allowing wastewater to be treated for a further 1,400 residents.

Environmental monitoring in Estonia

Asbestos disposal in the Voivodship Lublin

In the past, asbestos was greatly appreciated as a building material until it was realised that asbestos dust posed a serious health risk. Switzerland is helping Poland to introduce a system for the monitoring and disposal of asbestos in the Voivodship Lublin. It will also remove rubbish containing asbestos from illegal dumps and will renew the roofs of 32'000 houses.

Promotion of renewable energy in Primorska

Up to now, "green energy" in Slovenia has been almost exclusively derived from hydroelectric power plants, but that is set to change. Switzerland has been supporting a project in Slovenia that promotes other sources of renewable energy: a noise barrier along a motorway has been equipped with solar panels and 29 public buildings that were previously heated with oil have been converted to biomass heating, 12 of which have also been made energy efficient.

This is also true for Romania, where the National Agency for Fiscal Administration is situated in the Ministry of Public Finance. The Swiss Contribution to enlargement aims to finance a broad variety of projects. The PPF to Croatia provided the necessary financial and technical assistance to the Executing Agency Croatian Waters – Hrvatske vode – to elaborate high quality project documents for seven water supply and wastewater systems in municipalities of the region Gorski Kotar. Such preparatory works contained complex studies, the drawing of preliminary plans, the receipt of location permits, etc. Based on this information, Switzerland was able to commit funds to well-elaborated projects.
