05.06.2026 – Federal Council approves Franco-Swiss military cooperation document
To ensure security at the G7 summit, which is being hosted by France in Évian from 15 to 17 June, the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and the French Ministry of the Armed Forces and Veterans’ Affairs have drawn up a Joint Procedural Document (JPD). This document sets out the framework for military cooperation between Switzerland and France during the summit. Its purpose is to ensure the smooth running of any joint activities, particularly on Lake Geneva and in the airspace, thereby contributing to security. The Federal Council approved it at its meeting on 5 June. The Federal Council approved it at its meeting on 5 June, adding to the measures taken in preparation for the summit.

08.05.2026 – The Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis received the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs Jean-Noël Barrot
The head of the FDFA, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, received the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, in Geneva for an exchange. G7 was also a topic. The two ministers discussed the ongoing cooperation between Switzerland and France on security and the organisation of the summit. They emphasised the importance of mutual support in ensuring a successful and incident-free G7 summit. France welcomed Switzerland’s commitment and expressed its willingness to raise its profile, as well as that of International Geneva, during the summit.
06.05.2026 – The Federal Council introduces controls at internal borders during the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains
In the context of the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, Switzerland will temporarily carry out controls at its internal borders along the border with France from 10 to 19 June 2026. This was decided by the Federal Council of Switzerland at its meeting of 6 May 2026 in order to strengthen its support for the cantons concerned by the G7 summit.
Although the summit is taking place in France, the cities of Geneva and Lausanne, as well as the entire Lake Geneva region, are exposed to certain security risks. Previous G7 summits have seen violent clashes, acts of vandalism and sabotage, as well as material damage. In addition, the high number of persons protected under international law in the Lake Geneva region, together with the tense geopolitical situation, pose a range of challenges. As a result, the Canton of Geneva, which is responsible on Swiss territory for coordinating operations related to the G7 summit, requested the temporary reintroduction of controls at internal borders, both on land and on the lake. The Federal Council approved this request.
The Federal Council is thus strengthening its support for the cantons affected by the G7 summit, namely the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais. At the beginning of April, it had already decided that the Confederation would contribute to the costs incurred by the three cantons to ensure security. The subsidiary deployment of the armed forces was approved by the Federal Assembly during the spring session. It will therefore be possible to deploy up to 5,000 military personnel to support the security measures implemented by the civilian authorities.
01.04.2026 – G7 summit in Évian: Swiss government to contribute to security costs
The G7 summit, organised by France, will take place from 15 to 17 June 2026 in Évian, near the border with Switzerland. In a context of heightened global tensions, the summit requires exceptional security measures, in Switzerland as well. The cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais have therefore asked for support from the Confederation. At its meeting on 1 April 2026, the Federal Council decided that the Confederation will contribute to the security costs borne by the three cantons.
28.01.2026 – G7 summit in Évian: support from Swiss Armed Forces and restriction of airspace
At its meeting on 28 January 2026, the Federal Council approved the deployment of the Swiss Armed Forces as a support service to assist the civilian authorities with security measures during the G7 summit to be held in Évian-les-Bains, France, from 15 to 17 June 2026. This commitment, which is subsidiary in nature, will supplement the security measures put in place by the civil authorities. The Federal Assembly approved this commitment during its spring session of 2026.
