Switzerland reaffirms solidarity with Ukraine

During the official visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Bern on Monday 15 January, Switzerland and Ukraine acknowledged the depth and dynamism of their bilateral relations. The Swiss government delegation, led by President Viola Amherd, underscored Switzerland's continued solidarity with Ukraine. Another key item on the agenda was the follow-up to the meeting of national security advisers hosted in Davos on Sunday within the framework of the Ukrainian peace formula. Switzerland expressed its willingness to organise a high-level summit.


Switzerland and China renew high-level contacts and deepen relations in the run-up to 75th anniversary

On Monday, 15 January, a Federal Council delegation led by President Viola Amherd received a Chinese delegation led by Premier Li Qiang at the Lohn Estate for an official visit to Switzerland. This was the first such high-level meeting since the pandemic. The delegations discussed the deep and wide-ranging bilateral relations characterised by dialogue on around 30 issues, as well as a range of current international affairs.



Peace formula: National security advisers discuss in Davos principles for lasting peace in Ukraine

On 14 January 2024, Switzerland and Ukraine will host the fourth national security advisers' (NSA) meeting in Davos within the framework of the Ukrainian peace formula. The aim of the conference, to be co-chaired by Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, is to finalise the talks at the level of national security advisers on principles for a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. These principles should form the basis for the next stages of the peace process. Switzerland is making an important contribution to this through the conference in Davos.


Switzerland announces candidacy for Secretary General of Council of Europe

Former federal councillor Alain Berset has expressed his interest in taking up the post of Secretary General of the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe. The Federal Department of foreign affairs (FDFA) supports this candidacy and submitted it today to the chair of the Committee of Ministers of the Council.



Switzerland steps up winter aid for Ukrainians

Facing the severe challenges of an unforgiving winter, millions in Ukraine find themselves in dire need of assistance. In response, Switzerland's federal government is supporting the beleaguered Ukrainian population this winter too with targeted action and an additional CHF 11.8 million in aid. This brings the total investment in winter relief measures up to around CHF 26 million.


Switzerland supports the International Criminal Court with forensic experts

The conflict resulting from Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine continues. War crimes and serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights are suspected. The International Criminal Court (ICC), tasked to investigate the situation, relies on the assistance of the States Parties to the Rome Statute to gather evidence in Ukraine. Switzerland responded to the ICC's request for assistance and the dispatch of specialists.


Federal Council approves draft negotiating mandate with European Union

At its meeting on 15 December, the Federal Council approved the draft negotiating mandate with the European Union (EU). The mandate sets out guidelines for the negotiations, which will get under way once the mandate is definitively adopted, after consultation with Parliament and the cantons.


Tunisian Foreign Affairs and Migration Minister pays courtesy visit to Bern

Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis received Tunisian Foreign Affairs and Migration Minister Nabil Ammar in Bern for a courtesy visit on 14 December. Talks with Ms Baume-Schneider, head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP), focused on migration issues. The meeting with Ignazio Cassis, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), focused on foreign policy developments in the region.
