Outcome of Durban Climate Conference Hangs in the Balance

In the lead up to the end of the UN climate negotiations in Durban, it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that a satisfactory outcome will be achieved. The negotiations at the conference will continue into Friday night and are expected to be concluded in the early hours of Saturday morning.

On the occasion of her participation in the UN Climate Conference in Durban, Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard stressed the importance of the commitment of all major emitters for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Ms Leuthard held meetings with several environmental ministers from Europe, Africa and Asia in Durban.

President of the Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), met Mr Toomas Hendrik Ilves, President of the Republic of Estonia, for an official working visit at Lohn, near Bern. They discussed a number of bilateral and international questions. Among the agenda items were the European Union, its neighbourhood policies and the crisis in the euro zone.

Switzerland supports democratic transition together with the Francophonie

Switzerland draws a positive balance of its activities as chair of the Conference of Heads of State and of Government of the International Organisation of the Francophonie (IOF) at the half-way point through its term in office, which lasts until the Kinshasa Summit in October 2012 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the same time, Switzerland will continue to chair the Ministerial Conference of the Francophonie until December 2011.

Egyptian-Swiss expert meeting on frozen assets restitution

Delegations from Egypt and Switzerland convened on 2 December 2011 in Berne to hold a legal expert meeting on frozen assets restitution. The aim of the talks was to take stock of progress made so far and to strengthen bilateral cooperation with a view to reaching the common goal: an efficient restitution of any assets of illicit origin from the entourage of the former Mubarak regime.

UN Climate Conference: very little Progress Achieved by First Week of Negotiations

Little progress has been achieved by the delegates from over 190 countries during the first week of negotiations at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa. The Kyoto states, the USA, the newly industrialised countries and the developing countries have become entrenched in their positions.

Migration as an opportunity for development

High-ranking figures and representatives from some 160 countries are meeting today and tomorrow in a conference in Geneva to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by migration. The event was opened by Federal Councillor and head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) Simonetta Sommaruga. The meeting marks the end of Switzerland's presidency of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).

31st International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent

President of the Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey, President of the ICRC Jakob Kellenberger and President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Tadateru Konoé opened the 31st International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Geneva on 28 November. The aim of the conference is to strengthen international humanitarian law and humanitarian action. The conference will last until 1 December.
