Sustainable Development Report 2012 – 20 years of sustainable development in Switzerland since the Rio Earth Summit: a contrasting evolution

(FSO) - Living conditions in Switzerland are good and at a high level in international comparison. Inequalities persist, however, both at the national and international levels. The consumption of non-renewable resources does not make it possible to preserve available stocks for future generations. These are the main conclusions of the "Sustainable Development Report 2012" published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE), the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Visit by the United States Special Envoy for Middle East Peace to Bern

This morning, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter met the United States Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, David Hale. The talks focused on the state of the peace process in the Near East, in particular the question of Switzerland’s commitment to the application of international humanitarian law in the region. Mr Hale’s visit to Switzerland concludes a trip he has made to several countries in the Middle East.

The third round of consultations on human rights between Switzerland and Tajikistan took place on 25 April 2012 in Douchanbé. During the talks, a number of priority subjects of Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) were discussed. These consultations are complemented by exchanges of expertise and specific projects carried out in conjunction with the authorities and with Tajik civil society.

The approval process for projects within the frame of the Switzerland’s Enlargement Contribution unfolded in a satisfactory manner. The number of definitively approved projects virtually doubled in comparison with last year. Numerous projects that had been approved in the previous years were able to be further implemented according to plan.

The Federal Council adopts principles for institutional solutions with the EU

The Federal Council has adopted a number of institutional principles at a special meeting devoted to current aspects of Switzerland’s policy on Europe. They are intended to form the basis for proposals on institutional solutions that Switzerland will submit to the EU. They will now be submitted to the Foreign Affairs Committees of the National Council and Council of States, the cantons and the social partners for consultations.

Successful mediation between Russia and Georgia by Switzerland

Representatives of Georgia and of Russia today signed a bilateral agreement in Geneva governing customs administration and the supervision of commercial goods. The agreement was reached thanks to mediation by Switzerland. On the basis of its protective mandate for the two countries, Switzerland mediated between Russia and Georgia and brought the negotiations to a successful conclusion. The signing of the bilateral agreement paves the way for Russia to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the near future.

Official visit to Bern by the Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman

On 24 April 2012 Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter received the Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman for an official working visit in Bern. The talks covered relations between Switzerland and Israel, the Middle East peace process, humanitarian aspects and the development of the political situation in the Middle East and North Africa.

Swiss woman hostage in Mali freed

A Swiss woman kidnapped on 15 April in Timbuktu, Mali, has been freed. The woman was released into the custody of a representative of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) by the group holding her. She has been transferred to a safe place, and is reported to be in good health considering the circumstances.

Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons Switzerland – EU: Invocation of the Safeguard Clause with respect to the EU-8 States

At its meeting today, the Federal Council has decided to invoke the safeguard clause provided for in the Agreement between Switzerland and the EU on the free movement of persons, applying it to the EU-8 Member States. As of 1 May 2012, category B residence permits granted to citizens of these countries will be subject to quotas. Furthermore, the Federal Council has decided to examine additional measures in the domain of accompanying measures and on the issue of integration.

Yearly consultations of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Seoul

Representatives of Poland, Sweden and Switzerland, Member States of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) in Korea, met in Seoul on the 18th and 19th of April 2012 for their yearly consultations. Discussions focused on current tasks of the NNSC and recent developments on the Korean Peninsula. The NNSC Member States reasserted their long-term commitment to contribute to a permanent peace solution on the Korean Peninsula.
