Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter meets with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr Dipu Moni

Swiss Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA, welcomed his counterpart from Bangladesh Dr Dipu Moni on an official working visit. The two ministers reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries and discussed various international issues, including the political and economic situation in Asia and climate change.


Switzerland hosts a conference on international coordination in the fight against terrorism

To optimise counter-terrorism coordination between the recently established Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), the UN, and other international and regional organisations, Switzerland hosted an international conference in Interlaken on 23 and 24 February 2012. The conference was organised by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA and opened by Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga. The conference helped coordinate the activities of the various actors in the fight against terrorism and underscored the key role played by the UN.



Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter to participate in conference on Somalia in London

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will participate in the international conference on Somalia to be held on 23 February 2012 in London. Switzerland – via its humanitarian assistance and the office of its special representative to Sudan, Southern Sudan and the Horn of Africa (BSSA) – is working to promote stabilisation in Somalia. It allocated around 40 million Swiss francs in 2011 to projects in this region of eastern Africa.


Political consultations between Nigeria and Switzerland

The Secretary of State of the FDFA, Peter Maurer, received a Nigerian delegation in Berne on 20 February headed by the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria, Martin Uhomoibi, as part of political consultations between the two countries which were initiated in May 2010. This high-level meeting addressed a number of bilateral and multilateral topics and is being followed up by technical meetings as part of a partnership on migration and consultations on human rights.


Human Rights Commissioner examines Switzerland

Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg will review Switzerland's policy and practice in the fight against discrimination from 20 to 23 February 2012. The focus will be on the areas of racism and xenophobia. This visit takes place as part of reviews of the humans right situation by the Council of Europe to which all member states are subjected. The last review for Switzerland took place in 2004.


For the first time more than 700,000 Swiss nationals registered abroad

703,640 Swiss nationals are now living abroad. This is 10% of the total population. The vast majority of these Swiss abroad (61.85%) are living in Europe. These facts emerge from the 2011 statistics for the Swiss abroad. Of the 435,203 Swiss nationals living in Europe, 96.67% – 420,653 persons – are living in member states of the European Union. Three out of four Swiss nationals also possess dual nationality.


Message on Switzerland’s International Cooperation in 2013 – 2016

On 15 February 2012, the Federal Council transmitted to Parliament the Message on Switzerland’s International Cooperation in the period 2013 – 16. For the first time, the Message describes in one document the tasks of humanitarian aid, development cooperation, economic and trade policy measures within the framework of development cooperation, and cooperation with the countries of Eastern Europe. While the principal objective of development cooperation remains poverty reduction, in the future, Switzerland plans to work more closely in fragile contexts and to contribute to overcoming global challenges which seriously worsen the prospects of poor countries.


Visit by Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer to Bern

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF), has today received the Bavarian Minister-President and President of the German Bundesrat, Horst Seehofer in Bern for a courtesy visit. Other meetings took place with Federal Councillors Didier Burkhalter and Johann Schneider-Ammann as well as with the President of the Council of States, Hans Altherr. In addition to discussions on Swiss European policy, the agenda of the talks focused on bilateral relations with Germany and in particular relations between Switzerland and Bavaria, covering economic and fiscal issues as well as questions concerning transport and energy.


Switzerland to be chairman-in-office of the OSCE in 2014

Switzerland will be chairman-in-office of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2014. The choice of Switzerland was confirmed today by the OSCE. Switzerland stood for this office together with Serbia, which will chair the organisation in 2015. The two countries have agreed to cooperate closely.


Swiss Cooperation with Mali: Definition of the common perspectives for 2012-2015

On 2 and 3 February 2012 in Bamako, Switzerland and its cooperation partner Mali met to take stock of the ongoing cooperation between the two countries and to launch their new strategy for the years 2012 to 2015. This new strategy formulates Swiss cooperation’s major points of thrust in this west African country over the next four years. The Memorandum of Understanding signed on this occasion paves the way to a new period of cooperation between Mali and Switzerland and defines their common perspectives for the coming years.


ADEA’s 2012 Triennale: Stepping up education and training for Africa’s sustainable development

The ADEA Triennale on education and training in Africa brings together a range of people working for education on the continent: government ministers, representatives of bilateral and multilateral agencies, members of research networks, NGOs, the private sector and socio-professional organisations. Adapting education systems to the challenges of sustainable development is the focus of the broad dialogue. The event takes place from 12-17 February 2012 in Ouagadougou and is organised by the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), a longstanding partner of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
