Bern, Press releases, 28.04.2012

This morning, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter met the United States Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, David Hale. The talks focused on the state of the peace process in the Near East, in particular the question of Switzerland’s commitment to the application of international humanitarian law in the region. Mr Hale’s visit to Switzerland concludes a trip he has made to several countries in the Middle East.

On the basis of its tradition of offering its good offices and promoting international law, Switzerland has been committed for several years to advancing peace and stability in the Near East as well as respect for international humanitarian law through dialogue with all parties. The repeated violations of international humanitarian law by the different parties have made finding a solution to the conflict increasingly difficult. Mr Burkhalter recalled that Switzerland had regularly appealed to all parties to respect their legal obligations and to enter into serious negotiations with the aim of resolving the conflict and improving the humanitarian situation.
