Bern, Press releases, 05.09.2011

President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), met Mr Iurie Leanca, deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs and European integration of the Republic of Moldova, in the framework of an official visit to the Watteville House in Bern. These talks provided an opportunity to discuss numerous bilateral and regional issues.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and the Republic of Moldova in 1992, cooperation between the two countries has intensified in numerous areas. President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey stressed that Swiss technical cooperation is present in Moldova, where it is carried out by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. Switzerland is particularly active in the areas of water management and public health.

In their talks, Mrs Calmy-Rey and Mr Leanca also discussed the issue of migration. During their previous meeting in May 2010 in the margins of the regional conference of Swiss ambassadors in Chisinau, Mrs Calmy-Rey and her Moldovan counterpart signed an agreement aimed at facilitating the issuance of visas as well as a readmission agreement. These agreements marked a major step forward. They entered into force on 1 February 2011 and have been working very well.

Mrs Calmy-Rey also stressed the economic links between Switzerland and the Republic of Moldova but also pointed out that considerable potential remained and that bilateral trade could be intensified.

In the second part of the day, the Moldovan minister of foreign affairs paid a courtesy visit to the president of the National Council Jean-René Germanier.
