Bern, Press releases, 29.09.2011

The Federal Council has appointed Michel Gottret, currently Ambassador to Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Switzerland to Libya. Ambassador Gottret will take up his new post in Tripoli as soon as possible.

Michel Gottret, born in 1949, graduated in physics from the Federal Institute of Technology. He entered the diplomatic service of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) in 1979. As a diplomat, he carried out several different functions at the headquarters in Bern and held posts in Paris, Copenhagen and Washington. In 2002, the Federal Council appointed him as ambassador to Algeria and Mauritania with residence in Algiers. Since October 2007, he has been ambassador to Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.

Ambassador Gottret will take up his new post as soon as possible. Clarifications and preparations are currently under way concerning the re-opening of the Swiss Embassy in Tripoli, which had to be closed at the beginning of 2011 for security reasons.

The President of the Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, and the Federal Chancellor, Corina Casanova, have today received the credentials of the new Libyan Ambassador to Switzerland, Sliman Bouchuiguir.
