Bern, Press releases, 27.06.2011

President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey will pay a two-day official visit to the Romanian capital Bucharest starting on 30 June. She will meet the Romanian President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Emil Boc. Their talks will focus on bilateral relations, European policy and international issues.

The visit marks 100 years of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Romania. A meeting is also planned with the speakers of each of the houses of the Romanian parliament, Senator Mircea-Dan Geoana and MP Roberta Alma Anastase.

In the past 20 years Switzerland has intensified its bilateral relations with Romania, holding meetings at ministerial level almost annually. Bilateral trade has increased tenfold from CHF 100 million in 1992 to over CHF 1 billion in 2010.

Last September Romania and Switzerland agreed on a cooperation programme in the framework of the Swiss enlargement contribution to the new central and east European EU states. Over a period of five years Switzerland will finance projects and programmes with a total value of CHF 181 million. Switzerland supported Romania from the beginning of the 1990s until its EU membership in 2007.
