Bern, Press releases, 06.05.2011

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) expresses its grave concern at the recent turn of events in Syria. The FDFA calls on the Syrian authorities to put an end to the repression of the Syrian people and to respect their fundamental rights.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) has been closely following the events in Syria over recent weeks and expresses its grave concern about the turn that these events have taken. The FDFA deplores that hundreds of people have been killed or injured as a result of the violence, and it extends its sincere sympathy to the victims’ families. It also calls for the immediate launch of an independent inquiry into the exact circumstances surrounding the outbreak of violence.

The FDFA urges the Syrian authorities to put an immediate end to the repression of the Syrian people and to respect their fundamental rights, particularly their right to freedom of expression and to freedom of assembly. It condemns the use of live ammunition against protesters.

The FDFA also calls on the Syrian authorities to allow foreign journalists to cover the events by guaranteeing them access to the crisis-torn regions.
