On the invitation of the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, will address the Summit on the topic of the future of nuclear energy. The Chernobyl Summit, which has been organised to mark the 25th anniversary of the disaster, will focus on the lessons learned from past nuclear accidents and the development of strategies for the safer use of nuclear energy. The safety of nuclear power plants has become a very topical issue in light of the recent nuclear accidents in Fukushima, Japan.
Since the Chernobyl tragedy in 1986, Switzerland has worked with the international community to develop security measures in Chernobyl and to improve safety measures for nuclear power plants of the same type as Chernobyl. To date, Switzerland has contributed euro 27 million to projects such as the Chernobyl Shelter Fund for the construction of the new structure to contain the damaged reactor.
