Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves was welcomed with military honours at Lohn estate in Kehrsatz. Switzerland, which never recognised the annexation of Estonia by the Soviet Union, resumed its diplomatic relations with the Baltic republic in 1991. In addition to their similarity of size, Switzerland and Estonia have many resemblances and share many values, thanks mainly to their common European heritage.
President of the Confedederation Micheline Calmy-Rey stressed that relations between Switzerland and Estonia are excellent. As she did in her last journey to Tallin in October 2010, the Swiss Foreign Minister discussed a number of bilateral questions with Mr Ilves. They talked about Swiss-Estonian cooperation in the field of e-government and of fighting against cyber-criminality, which has already produced a number of interesting results, and they noted to the smooth functioning of economic exchanges between the two countries.
Other current issues were also discussed during the talks, including in particular Russia's accession to the WTO, global governance, situation in the Balkans and methods of dealing with the current crisis in the euro zone.
