FDFA concerned by events in Tunisia

Bern, Press release, 12.01.2011

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) wishes to express its concern regarding the events that have occurred in recent days in Tunisia. The Department would appeal for dialogue and respect for human rights, including the freedoms of speech and association.

The riots which have shaken Tunisia since the end of December, and the related violence, are a matter of concern to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).

The FDFA deplores the fact that these riots have resulted in many people being killed and injured. It offers its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims and hopes that the situation in the country will quickly return to normal.

The Department calls on Tunisia to show respect for dialogue, fundamental freedoms and human rights, including the freedoms of speech and association. With this in mind, the FDFA is inviting the Tunisian Ambassador in Bern to an interview, in order to convey Swiss concerns.

The FDFA would also recommend that persons intending to travel to Tunisia consult the travel advice available on its website. In particular, travellers are advised to seek information on the local situation and security before and during their stay, and to follow the security instructions issued by the local authorities.
