Bern, Press releases, 08.09.2010

Today and tomorrow, 8 and 9 September, the Federal Council will be hosting a state visit to Switzerland by the German President, Christian Wulff. Following his arrival at Zurich airport, the President will be received in Bern with military honours where official talks will take place. The programme on Thursday will include visits with an emphasis on science and research.

At the invitation of the Swiss Federal Council, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Christian Wulff, and his wife, Bettina Wulff, are paying a state visit to Switzerland. Germany and Switzerland maintain close political contacts.

In her address in the parliamentary lobby, President Doris Leuthard stressed that a state visit provides an opportunity to accord special recognition to the neighbourly cooperation and long-standing friendship between the two countries and to address matters at issue in such a manner. The visit is an expression of the multifaceted and close human, economic, political and cultural relations that are highly beneficial to both countries.

Discussions will focus on bilateral relations between Switzerland and Germany, particularly challenges with regard to fiscal and transport issues. In addition, there will also be an exchange on current economic issues, on the international financial architecture, as well as on broader international issues and cooperation in the fields of science, research and education.

The two-day state visit consists of an official part in Bern with an official reception, military honours, official talks and a state dinner followed by an excursion on the second day. The excursion will include a visit to the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Zurich.

The last state visit to Switzerland by a German President was made by Johannes Rau in May 2000.
