Bern, Press releases, 01.09.2010

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) condemns the killing of four settlers on the West Bank, which took place just before direct peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians were due to resume on Thursday in Washington.

On Tuesday evening, four Israelis were attacked and killed near a Jewish settlement in the Hebron region in the south of the West Bank. The FDFA condemns the killings, which came ahead of direct peace negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The Department appeals to all parties in the conflict to show restraint and to do nothing that could endanger the negotiations that will be conducted under the auspices of the United States.

Switzerland, as the depositary state and as a signatory of the Geneva Conventions, calls on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, which in particular forbids acts of violence against civilians.
