Bern, Press releases, 12.08.2010

The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has appointed the Swiss national Markus Müller as head of the Police Advisory Group in Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday. The FDFA welcomes this appointment.

During a meeting of foreign ministers in July, the OSCE decided to establish an OSCE Police Advisory Group (PAG) in Kyrgyzstan. Switzerland, which was represented at the meeting by federal councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, supports this decision. One of the principal aims of the advisory group, which will probably have 52 members, will be to provide advice to the local police on how to defuse tensions between ethnic groups in Kyrgyzstan.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) is pleased about the appointment of its employee Mr Markus Müller as head of the OSCE police advisory group. As former head of the Swiss cooperation office in Kyrgyzstan and as former head of the OSCE mission in Bishkek, Mr Müller has an excellent knowledge of the situation in the country. This appointment is initially fixed for a period of four months.
