Bern, Press releases, 04.06.2010

Switzerland is dismayed by the news of the death of Floribert Chebeya Bahizire, executive director of the Congolese human rights organisation, “La voix des sans voix”, that occurred on 2 June 2010. Mr Chebeya was found dead in his car in Kinshasa.

Mr Chebeya was actively involved in defending human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Switzerland pays tribute to a man renowned for his tenacity and his commitment, which have led to numerous acts of intimidation directed against him in the last few years.

It asks the Congolese authorities to do everything in its power to conduct an independent and transparent inquiry into the circumstances of this tragic event and to take the appropriate measures.

Switzerland extends its condolences to his family and friends, and takes the opportunity of this very sad event to reaffirm its solidarity with all Congolese organisations active in defending human rights.
