Bern, Press releases, 25.10.2010

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) welcomes the excellent organisation and hosting of the XIIIth Summit of the Francophonie, which was held from 22-24 October in Montreux. Some 40 heads of state and government, as well as delegations representing member and observer countries of the International Organisation of the Francophonie (IOF) were welcomed to this successful high-level conference. The FDFA would like to emphasise the engagement of all partners involved in this Summit. The department extends its warm thanks to them.

After the conclusion of the XIIIth summit of the Francophonie, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs notes that Switzerland, true to its mission as host State, met its initial goal of running a convivial summit and getting the population involved in it. Organised in a record time of thirteen months, this important international gathering, which was attended by some 3000 participants, was a genuine success.

Switzerland mobilised considerable resources at the federal, cantonal and communal levels to host the XIIIth Summit of the Francophonie. The FDFA wishes to express its appreciation to the authorities of the cantons of Vaud, Geneva and all other cantons and communes involved, and particularly to the commune of Montreux and to the police and army, for their invaluable assistance and their impeccable management of this major event. It also thanks the many public and private partners from near and far who supported, organised or hosted the Summit.

The Montreux Declaration and the resolutions adopted within the framework of the Summit highlight the importance of having a circle of influence and a trusted forum such as the Francophonie to advance discussions on issues as central as global governance, sustainable development and the role of the French language in a globalised world. The FDFA is convinced that the quality of the welcome shown in Montreux will have a positive influence on Switzerland's image in the Francophonie and that the economic and political effects of the XIIIth Summit will be felt for a long time.

The next Summit of the Francophonie will be hosted by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2012, in conformity with the decision taken at the Quebec Summit and confirmed at the Montreux Summit. The FDFA wishes the DRC authorities the best of success for the XIVth Summit of the Francophonie.
