The Foreign Policy Strategy 2020-23 takes as its central starting point the volatile international environment in which Switzerland operates. This volatility is decisively increased by the presence of major risks. The security and prosperity of a state is increasingly also determined by resilience in response to such major risks as the Covid-19 pandemic, global warming, disinformation campaigns in the digital space, financial crises or terrorism. This year's International Law Day of the Directorate of International Law aims to show that international law does not only play a static role in major risks, but can actively strengthen the resilience of a state like Switzerland and the international community in general.

There will be two panel discussions with representatives from academia, politics, international organizations, the private sector and civil society.

Panel 1

The role of international law in the resilience of states and societies to major risks

Panel 2

Challenges for the rule of law and democracy in the event of major risks and the possibilities for human rights to influence the handling of major risks.
