Sustainable Livelihoods and Social Development (SLSD)

Widespread poverty, weak institutions, and scarce public services characterize the environment in the South East of Afghanistan. The project aims to improve the livelihood and resilience of resource-poor and smallholder farmers in the provinces of Paktia and Khost, through improvement of agricultural production, natural resource management, market linkages and through strengthening agricultural service delivery. The project covers a region, which has been deprived of other donor support.

Despite high urbanization rates, Afghanistan remains an essentially rural society; an estimated 70% of the population lives in rural areas and 61% of households depend fully or partially on income derived from agricultural activities. Up to one-third of the Afghan population faces food insecurity.

Khost and Paktia provinces are situated in the South East of Afghanistan bordering with Pakistan. Both provinces show higher than average levels of poverty and food insecurity. Due to the instability in the region, few development actors are present and public services are limited.
