Core Contribution to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

The International Union for Conservation of Nature, uniting State and non-State members worldwide, is the leading global knowledge organization for nature, integration both nature conservation and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods and economies. SDC contributes to implementing the Union’s programme to reverse biodiversity loss and strengthen climate resilience while ensuring gender equality and inclusiveness. Switzerland is a State member and hosts IUCN’s headquarters.

Contesto The triple planetary crises of biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution remain among the most severe global threats to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Biodiversity continues to decline at an alarming rate: ecosystems on land and in freshwater are under unprecedented pressure, and the majority of the ocean is affected by human-induced stressors such as warming, acidification, overfishing and pollution. Rising temperatures are repeatedly breaking records, putting the world increasingly at risk of missing the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement, with potentially devastating consequences by the end of the century. These planetary crises disproportionately affect the poorest communities and Indigenous Peoples, who depend most directly on natural resources and often live in regions highly exposed to environmental change. Healthy ecosystems remain fundamental for human well-being, economic stability and peace. In line with Switzerland’s interests and commitments, investing in Nature-based Solutions offers an effective pathway for a resilient, equitable and climate-compatible development trajectory.
Obiettivi

The overall goal of IUCN is to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by scaling up just, inclusive and effective conservation across land, freshwater and ocean ecosystems, while addressing the underlying drivers of nature loss.

The Programme 2026 – 2029, aligned with the Union’s 20-year Strategic Vision Unite for Nature: On the Path to 2045, aims to secure a thriving, resilient planet where nature and people flourish together through rights-based, gender-responsive and socially equi-table approaches.

Gruppi target

Direct target groups:

  • IUCN Secretariat
  • IUCN Regional Offices

Indirect target groups:

  • Policy and decision makers at global, regional and local levels;
  • Local communities;
  • Indigenous groups.
Effetti a medio termine

During the 2026 – 2029 Programme, IUCN aims to deliver results in two complementary domains:

  • Just and equitable conservation of nature at scale, strengthening governance, restoring and protecting ecosystems, and ensuring that conservation benefits are shared fairly; and
  • Global transformations, advancing systemic change across key sectors to address the drivers of biodiversity loss and align societal, economic and environmental systems with a nature-positive future.

By mobilising its Union-wide knowledge, partnerships, science and convening power, IUCN will enhance institutional capacity, support evidence-based policy engagement and foster inclusive, community-rooted action that contributes to long-term recovery of nature and improved well-being for people.

Risultati

Risultati principali attesi:

During the 2026 – 2029 phase, IUCN will deliver key outputs that strengthen its ability to implement the Programme effectively and achieve impact across the Union and its global network. Expected outputs include:

  • Strengthened Union capacities (Members, Commissions, Secretariat) to scale conserva-tion impact and enhance equity and governance across land, freshwater, ocean and people-focused work.
  • Enhanced knowledge, data, standards and tools to support effective conservation, restoration and policy implementation.
  • More coherent and evidence-based policy engagement at global, regional and national levels.
  • Targeted collaboration with SDC through joint learning and exchanges on emerging priorities at the nature–climate nexus.

Risultati fasi precedenti:   The Union’s leadership on Nature-based Solutions (NbS)1 continued to shape global conservation and climate agendas. Building on the Global NbS Standard established in 2020, IUCN contributed to its uptake across multilateral and bilateral cooperation agencies, climate and biodiversity financing mechanisms, and national policy processes. In recent years, IUCN has complemented this work by advancing the emerging global “nature-positive” approach, which positions NbS as a key operational pathway for halting and reversing nature loss across sectors and policy areas.
