JOR, GIZ, Wastewater Treatment in Azraq
In partnership with the EU, Switzerland will contribute to the construction of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) serving Azraq municipality and the nearby refugee camp. The proposed project stems from the Government of Jordan’s (GoJ) interest in developing integrated sanitation services that benefit both Jordanians and refugees, while also protecting the area’s groundwater resources. Switzerland will build on its established relationships with local communities to support efficient and sustainable wastewater management and demonstrate the potential of wastewater reuse.

| Contesto | Jordan remains one of the most water-scarce countries in the world and continues to host large numbers of Syrian refugees, placing sustained pressure on water and sanitation services. In response, the GoJ is promoting more integrated service delivery models. In Azraq, Switzerland had planned a wastewater treatment plant to serve Azraq town. As a result of recent discussion with the GoJ, a partnership with the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through GIZ was established to jointly built a WWTP that serves Azraq town and the nearby refugee camp optimizing investments and ensuring long-term sustainability. |
| Obiettivi | To contribute to the development of a green, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive economy through enhanced wastewater treatment and reuse practices in Azraq district, including Azraq refugee camp and Azraq town. |
