Improving food availability and access for vulnerable populations in Akobo East

Progetto concluso

This project aims at contributing to the improvement of food security and resilience of the population in Akobo East (Jonglei), through enhancing agricultural productivity, increasing incomes, and promoting alternative livelihood options. Akobo East faces crisis levels of food insecurity, but has the potential for agricultural development. To address the volatile situation, the project also contains an emergency component to respond to urgent humanitarian needs, if required.

Contesto Akobo East is an agro-pastoral zone with cattle keeping and agriculture as main livelihoods. The County’s population is currently experiencing crisis levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. This is caused by climatic and geographic challenges, a disastrous economic downturn, as well as impacts of conflict and violence. However, there is a potential for strengthening the resilience of the affected population through agricultural investment, improved farming techniques and livelihood diversification.
Obiettivi To improve food availability and access for vulnerable populations through modern agricultural practices, with response to protracted crisis, while creating resilience to external shocks.
Gruppi target
  • APFS members from the previous phase (900);
  • 900 new beneficiaries, to be promoted to full APFS members;
Effetti a medio termine
  • Communities’ resilience to food insecurity enhanced through the provision of seeds, tools, drip-irrigation kits and treadle pumps.
  • Improved crop and seeds management.
  • Improved access to information and assets towards better income and savings.
  • Contingency fund for emergency needs set up.
Risultati

Risultati principali attesi:  

  • Vegetable seeds, drip irrigation kits, treadle pumps distributed for new beneficiaries;
  • Beneficiaries trained to use ox-ploughs;
  • Beneficiaries trained to use post-harvest techniques;
  • Drying slabs available to beneficiaries;
  • Market stalls available to the population;
  • Water catchments available to the population.


Risultati fasi precedenti:   30 APFS established in 4 payams and 900 members trained (weekly) on good agricultural practices; Seeds and tools distributed; Refresher trainings for 30 facilitators conducted every 6 month; Community gardens (dry-season farming) established in 30 villages, 3 treadle pumps per village distributed; Refresher training for 60 CAHWs conducted.
