Contexte

Whilst globally, the health of children has improved significantly (7.7 million deaths in 2010 compared to the 11.9 million deaths in 1990), the health of women and mothers (251 deaths per 100‘000 births) is stagnating and deserves significantly more attention and funding. The global commitment to combating infectious diseases (particularly in the areas of HIV, malaria and TB) has paid off and achieved very positive results: Malaria mortality has dropped by more than a third since 2004; the number of people undergoing antiretroviral therapy has risen from 2 to over 6 million; the number of new HIV infections has begun to fall for the first time, particularly amongst children.

Objectifs

SolidarMed improves health care for 1.5 million people in southern and eastern Africa.

Outcome goals:

  1. The burden of disease due to malaria, HIV, TB and other diseases is reduced.
  2. The health of pregnant women, mothers and newborns is improved.
  3. The health of children is improved.

Groupes cibles

SolidarMed’s health programmes primarily target the population of rural areas in southern and eastern Africa, with a particular focus on poverty-related diseases. With this focus, we contribute to societal cohesion and the development of civil society. Depending on local needs and the corresponding programmatic focus, certain focal areas are given specific weight (e.g. programmes for mothers and newborns; to benefit youth and girls in HIV prevention programmes etc.).

Secondary target groups are the institutions and staff of health authorities at district and provincial level, which are strengthened to the effect that they can better provide health services. Furthermore, civil society organisations (NGOs, CBOs, self-help groups, health committees etc.) are supported as important factors in community organisation and empowerment.

Effets à moyen terme
  1. Primary health care in the programme areas has improved
  2. Health competencies and capacities at community level are strengthened
  3. The situation of health personnel in the programme areas has improved
  4. Processes of dialogue and decision-making are influenced by sensitising and engaging in dialogue with experts and policy makers.
