SPHERE Humanitarian Accountability Project 2022

Sphere’s strategic priorities for 2021-2025 are:

1. Sphere standards: Promote increased awareness, understanding, uptake, accessibility, localisation, ownership and review of Sphere standards across diverse contexts globally
2. Sphere community: Enhance the ownership and application of Sphere standards by expanding, diversifying and strengthening the global Sphere community of purpose and practice, and deepening engagement across the Sphere network
3. Humanitarian standards: Promote and facilitate collaboration and best practice across humanitarian standards to ensure quality and accountability in the sector and better respond to the needs of users and communities. Influence the inclusion of humanitarian standards in national, global and donor policies, to enhance economies of scale and promote institutionalisation
4. Accountability, evidence, impact and learning: Encourage accountability and learning, and better understand and articulate the evidence for and impact of Sphere standards

Resultados previstos:  

• Develop six training, learning and technical resources responding to the needs of local practitioners
• Conduct three locally-led training initiatives to increase preparedness of local actors
• Grow the Sphere Members network (by 66%) and Focal points network (by 15-20%) to increase the engagement of national and local organisations and support local ownership of standards
• Expand the HSP and collaborate across different sets of humanitarian standards to support users with their application
• Revise the CHS with improved clarity and accessibility, addressing critical gaps and mapping complementarities with other humanitarian standards
• Integrate the Sphere standards into more national disaster management policies and guidelines

Resultados de las fases anteriores:  

• Sphere is a global network of 134,000 subscribers, 46 organisational and 60 individual members, and 55 focal points across 49 countries. It has a growing community of 119 trainers in 54 countries
• Sphere standards are the most commonly used set of humanitarian standards, and are available in 40 languages
• Focal points actively promote and advocate for the application of the Sphere standards at country-level
• Sphere’s First Sphere Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) was launched in 2021 with 2,000 people from 150 countries
• Training of Trainer programmes targeting priority countries, such as Burkina Faso and Mozambique
• A range of thematic guides, training packages, learning tools and online resources were developed
• Sphere leads the Humanitarian Standards Partnership (HSP)
• COVID-19: Guidance on using hum. standards were developed as well as a series of 7 webinars and 9 case studies on good practice (e.g. on community-led responses, working with people on the move, providing palliative care)
• Sphere is part of task teams and advisory groups including the IASC RG2, the climate and environment charter for humanitarian organisations
• Sphere works with hum. clusters, OCHA and others for the consistent inclusion of Sphere, the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) and other humanitarian standards in policy and response frameworks such as Global Humanitarian Response Plans and country-level plans
• Sphere standards have been successfully integrated into National Disaster Management policies and national and local disaster management guidelines in various countries
