By the end of 2022, one million young people, working in teams or on their own, will implement personal actions to contribute to one of the four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and thereby to a sustainable future:
• Goal 6: water and sanitation
• Goal 12: production and consumption
• Goal 13: climate
• Goal 15: biodiversity
The message in a bottle contains the pupils' commitment to an action taken as part of 1MYAC.Participants can commit to one of the actions on the project website and document how they have implemented it.Young people can also visit the website to see the status of the actions and find inspiration to implement their own actions.
"Young people's engagement is crucial to the 2030 Agenda," said Christine Schneeberger, deputy head of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation's (SDC) Global Cooperation Department at the media conference for the launch of 1MYAC in Gletsch. "With this challenge, we are inviting them to do their part and at the same time bringing more attention to their concerns."
The 1 Million Youth Actions Challenge will be present at various international platforms until the end of 2022, including the World Conservation Union Congress in Marseille in early September, the World Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in early November, and the World Water Forum in Dakar and World Expo in Dubai in March 2022.
This is one of a series of initiatives the SDC is engaged in to encourage young people to get involved in efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda. In 2018, for example, young people gathered on the Aletsch Glacier to break a Guinness World Record: they wrote messages about fighting climate change on 125,000 postcards which were joined together to form the world's largest postcard. The SDC is part of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).
