Background

Access to reproductive and sexual health and rights is seriously threatened for many women and hildren in developing countries. Especially in sub-Saharan Africa, the risk of dying during pregnancy and childbirth is highest in the whole word. In the Western Balkans, dying from domestic violence is one of the highest death risks for women and girls. Apart from insufficient health care facilities, gender based discrimination of women and girls is a key obstacle to achieving reproductive and sexual health and rights. Therefore besides improving basic health care for future mothers it is indispensable to develop measures that protect women’s rights and enlarge their room to manoeuvre.

Objectives

To improve, protect and promote health and especially reproductive health for women and children in Western Africa and the Western Balkans.

Target groups

Women and children, with strengthened focus on youth – girls and boys. Men are included as strategic target group, if this supports the improvement of health for women and children.

Medium-term outcomes

  • To improve access to primary health care and to secure and improve assistance during pregnancy and childbirth for women
  • To protect, preserve and regain physical and mental integrity for abused women and girls
  • To improve the health situation of the population through information and sensitization on topics of reproductive health and rights and by improving societal frame conditions
  • Results

    Results from previous phases:

    • Targeted training of health professionals has improved the management of health centres and the quality of the service offer in the program areas.
    • Concentrated sensitization efforts in the population have lead to a higher frequenting of health centres. A significant augmentation of prenatal care consultations of more than 60% in the partner health centres could be observed. Also the number of attended birth’ at the health facilities has increased.
    • The construction of a health centre with maternity clinic in a suburb of Bamako has contributed to an important increase of the service offer for women and children.
    • In Bosnia-Herzegowina, Albania, Mali and Senegal professional, culturally sensitive and context adapted services for protection, counselling and therapy of victims of violence have been developed and staffed with skilled personnel. In the Western Balkans, 8’652 women victims of violence have received protection and professional care within 3 years.
    • As a consequence of intensified sensitization work with youth on gender and violence at schools an increasing number of youngsters has searched for support at a counselling service for victims of violence in Albania.
