Sierra Leone Landslide: Contribution to IFRC Emergency Appeal

On the night of 13 August 2017, the city of Freetown in Sierra Leone and its outskirts experienced torrential rains and landslides. At least 400 people were killed following the collapse of a hillside. 600 people are still missing and 3’000 were displaced. Through this contribution, Switzerland will assist 9’600 victims and affected people in Freetown with emergency and recovery services to improve the condition of shelter, water sanitation and hygiene as well as health care.

Background On the night of 13 August 2017, the city of Freetown and its outskirts experienced torrential rains and landslides. At least 400 people, including 100 children, were killed following the collapse of a hillside in the Regent area near the capital, in Greater Freetown early on 14 August 2017. 600 people are still missing and 3’000 have lost their homes. Since 1 July, Freetown has received triple the usual amount of rain. Most affected areas are within an area known as Regent. Other areas were also inundated at Lumely, Kissy Brook and Dworzak.
Objectives A total of 9’600 mudslides -affected people have access to emergency and recovery services to improve the condition of shelter, water sanitation and hygiene, health care and reduce risk of disaster of the affected people.
Target groups Emergency Appeal expects to target 9,600 people or 1,600 families (direct beneficiaries) and an approximate number of 50,000 indirect beneficiaries.
Medium-term outcomes

Outcome 1: Immediate risks to affected people are reduced through the provision of  first aid and psychosocial support.

Outcome 2: Immediate risk of waterborne diseases is reduced through the provision of drinking water, improved sanitation and hygiene promotion.

Outcome 3: The immediate shelter and household NFIs needs of the target population are met.

Outcome 4: The target population has durable and sustainable shelter.

Outcome 5 : Restorinf family links.

Outcome 6: Risk of disaster related to mudslide and floods of target communities reduced.

Outcome 7: National Society capacity in emergency response strengthened.

Outcome 8: Continue needs assessment to inform changes or medication on the response plan.
