Humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa: Switzerland increases aid for people in Sudan

At the international donors' conference on 15 April 2024 in Paris, Switzerland pledged CHF 19 million to mitigate the humanitarian consequences of the conflict in Sudan. As a result of the ongoing hostilities over the past year, the country is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our time. To date, 8.6 million people have been displaced, and the country is on the brink of a devastating famine. From the beginning of the crisis, Switzerland has been actively engaged at multiple levels to help end the conflict and improve the situation on the ground.


Switzerland steps up winter aid for Ukrainians

Facing the severe challenges of an unforgiving winter, millions in Ukraine find themselves in dire need of assistance. In response, Switzerland's federal government is supporting the beleaguered Ukrainian population this winter too with targeted action and an additional CHF 11.8 million in aid. This brings the total investment in winter relief measures up to around CHF 26 million.




FDFA renews support for Swiss Water and Sanitation Consortium

A world with adequate and equitable access to water, sanitation and hygiene for all is essential. The FDFA is therefore renewing its budget for the Swiss Water and Sanitation Consortium for 2023–27 with a total of 12 million francs. The fund helps ensure access to basic sanitation facilities for vulnerable communities in 13 countries throughout Africa and Asia.


Switzerland focuses on transboundary water management in New York

A Swiss delegation is taking part in the UN's 2023 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which is being held in New York from 10 to 19 July. The Swiss delegation hosted an event at the HLPF on transboundary water management as a driver of sustainable development and peace. The HLPF is a pivotal preparatory event for the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit to be held in September.


Switzerland increases support for rehabilitation of Ukrainian schools

Switzerland continues to provide aid to Ukraine. Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has approved an additional CHF 5.5 million to renovate and refurbish around 30 schools in Ukraine. The aim is to ensure that nearly 15,000 schoolchildren have access to a decent and safe education.


Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit turns 50

A celebration is in order: for half a century, the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) has been the face of Switzerland's humanitarian aid, providing assistance worldwide before, during and after crises of all kinds. Today, it is impossible to imagine Switzerland's international cooperation without it.


Ukraine: Switzerland sends ambulances and more fire engines

Switzerland is continuing its long-term support efforts in Ukraine. On Thursday 13 April, local NGOs in Kyiv received five used ambulances donated by the Canton of Basel-Stadt and the City of Zurich. More supplies and training will follow in the weeks to come. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), which is part of the FDFA, is funding and organising the transport.



Switzerland's international cooperation: SDC allocates programme contributions to 27 NGO partners

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has signed contribution agreements worth around CHF 270 million with 27 partners for the period 2023–24. Swiss NGOs are instrumental in accomplishing Switzerland's international cooperation objectives. With the support of the SDC and in cooperation with their local partners, they create decent jobs, work for the sustainable use of natural resources and transfer Swiss expertise and innovative approaches to local actors.


SDC prolongs support for Kantha Bopha children's hospitals in Cambodia for five more years

The Kantha Bopha children's hospitals, founded by Dr Beat Richner in 1992, have made a major contribution to improving the health system in Cambodia over the past 30 years. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has backed these efforts since the very beginning and will continue to support the hospitals until 2027. On March 17, 2023, SDC Director General Patricia Danzi signed an agreement to this effect with the Kantha Bopha Foundation.
