Hintergrund

Heavy storms and rains have caused deadly floods. The city of Derna, in eastern Libya, has been hard hit, with many buildings and infrastructure completely destroyed and entire neighbourhoods swept away. Access to the affected areas remains difficult due to the destruction of key infrastructure, such as bridges and roads. Communication is also complicated due to electricity, telephone and internet connections being cut off. The city of Derna has been declared a disaster area.

The UN has issued an urgent appeal of $71.4 million to address the needs of an estimated 250,000 people impacted by the catastrophic storm in the east of Libya, for a time frame of 3 months. OCHA has also reported that an estimation of more than 880,000 people are directly influenced by the floods.
