The hosting of the first bilateral summit of presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin in Geneva in June 2021 was a success for Switzerland's diplomacy and tradition of providing good offices. The delegations' visit also created the opportunity for bilateral meetings with President of the Confederation Guy Parmelin and the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis. Events like these raise Geneva's standing as a centre of global governance and bring Switzerland to the fore in global events.
In categorising the US–Russia Summit as an extraordinary event, the Confederation agreed with the Canton of Geneva to reimburse CHF 4,084,577, which is 80% of the expenses borne in relation to the Confederation's duty to ensure protection, as provided for in the Federal Act on Measures to Safeguard Internal Security (ISA; SR 120).
