On the margins of the IRENA conference, the official delegation met the Emirati Minister for Energy as well as the Minister of Water and Environment. In addition, Dr. Steinmann led a delegation of Swiss companies exhibiting at the WFES to complementary meetings with two key local authorities: the Regulation and Supervision Bureau (RSB) and the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA). The objective of the exchange – to support Swiss companies in gaining a more profound understanding of the regulatory structure of the UAE and the opportunities in the local markets – was gratefully received by both sides. The Swiss Pavilion, stronghold of the aforementioned exhibitors, displayed the products of approximately fifteen Swiss companies involved in renewable energy, waste and water sectors pertinent to the local markets. Among them, the centerpiece was the TOSA electric bus, tested in Geneva. Further afield, Switzerland was represented by the Bühler solar racer taking part in the solar car race and also by Solar Impulse, currently based in Abu Dhabi prior to its take-off for its round-the-world trip.
In honour of the Swiss presence in the UAE, the Embassy of Switzerland hosted a “Swiss Evening” comprising of a visit to the Solar Impulse airplane, followed by a cocktail reception at the Embassy.
