Organized by Tajik Technical University and Khorog State University, with support from the Government of Switzerland and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH), the program brings together 30 participants to tackle challenges faced by mountainous communities in Central Asia.
Tajikistan’s geographical features, with 93% of its land covered by mountains, make it highly vulnerable to climate change. The country experiences frequent disasters such as floods, debris-flows, landslides, and avalanches, which result in significant economic damage and occasional fatalities
Over eight days, participants from across the country will learn about floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and their links to climate change. They will also take part in hands-on field activities to apply their knowledge and improve disaster risk management skills. The program highlights the role of gender inclusion in disaster response and preparedness.
Collaboration and knowledge sharing are key aspects of the program, helping researchers and professionals work together on disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation strategies. By the end of the course, participants will have a better understanding of risks and ways to reduce them.
The Winter University serves as one of the actions towards the preparation for the High-level International Glacier Conference to be held in Dushanbe in May this year.
Salome Steib, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan highlighted: " Tajikistan’s future will heavily depend on young scientists to foster innovation, digital skills, and resilience against climate challenges. Therefore, Switzerland is committed to empowering them, with a special earmark to women. The Winter University provides a solid platform for learning, exchange of ideas and networking and is an ideal platform in preparation for the up-coming High-Level Glacier Conference which takes place in Dushanbe this May”.
The Winter University Program aims to strengthen cooperation and equip participants with tools to assess and manage disaster risks, helping Tajikistan build resilience for the future.
