The emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has created serious challenges for the KMK due to insufficient stocks of chlorine for disinfection and unclear governmental response plans concerning water quality and its monitoring. Hence, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (Humanitarian Aid) decided to support the KMK with water test kits and train the staff how to use the mobile water test laboratory.

In March 2020 a four -days training was conducted by the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat’s (AKAH) specialists for 27 personnel of KMK including specialist from regional branches. After the training participants were able to put into the practice the equipment by conducting various water tests, including water test of artesian water, treated drinking water and river water.

Head of the Water Supply and Sewerage unit of KMK, Bohiri Gaibullo pointed out the timely provision of mobile water test kits and the trainings, saying, “Our staff really needed this kind of trainings as we are responsible for the supply of clean drinking water to people and we have to ensure the quality of water. These trainings will add to the knowledge we already have and will further build our capacity to conduct water quality test using mobile test kits”.

To ensure the sustainability of the project, AKAH specialist bear the responsibility of monitoring the regular use of the water test kits by KMK and its branches. “Through mutual support and knowledge sharing we can ensure the consumption and use of clean and safe water and avoid any water-born related diseases in the country” -says Imomberdi Berdov.
