The Swiss Cooperation office (SCO) in Tajikistan is glad to announce the opening of the 5th Ethno-Jazz Festival in Dushanbe, which kicks off on 28 April. Initiated and funded mainly by Switzerland the Ethno-Jazz Festival has become an established and anticipated music event for Tajik jazz fans since 2009.

The Dushanbe Ethno-Jazz Festival traditionally offers a rare opportunity for an intense intercultural dialogue between Tajikistan and other countries. As a continuation of this tradition, the festival welcomes guests from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, the US, France, and Germany for the fifth time. The increased number of participants and donors is a good sign for the popularity of the Festival.

To the joy of Tajik jazz-lovers, the Swiss music group "Florian Favre Trio" has been invited for the first time to participate in the festival. The Swiss band will share the stage with famous Tajik music groups, such as Avesto, Dadj, Bakht, Ruyo, Parvin Yusufi.

“Turning Tajik music into Jazz is a very interesting observation, and people love it. Music is a common language for friendship and the Ethno-Jazz Festival plays a good role in uniting people of different cultures“- says Mouttara Bashirova, Art and Culture Programme manager of SCO Tajikistan.

As a side event and to enhance the musical diversity of the festival, master classes for music students will be conducted in the Tajik National Conservatory. This will be a further chance for foreign and national musicians to share their experiences.

On Sunday 30 April, the event will close with a round-table discussion on the development of Ethno-Jazz in Central Asia and the world, which will provide the organisers with ideas of how to put together the next Ethno-Jazz Festival in Dushanbe, which is due to take place in 2019.

The Bactria Cultural Centre with support from the Tajik National Conservatory and the Ministry of culture of the Republic of Tajikistan and other donors organise the event. For festival’s programme and more information, please visit:  Jazzfestival
